AAP Crash Course: Part 2

Monday June 7th, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Lisa Mayo

You asked for it, and we delivered….Part 2 2018 AAP Classification Crash Course. This course will dive deeper into the 2018 AAP after our May 3rd Part 1 course. The focus will be on the periodontitis category with frequently asked questions and helpful hints to staging and grading. The peri-implant category will be defined with case examples to enhance identification of peri-implant health and disease. Part 2 will assist the dental educator with chair-side tips to patient classification. Even if you missed Part 1, there is knowledge to be gained with Part 2 so don’t miss out on this opportunity!

AAP Crash Course: 1999 and 2018 Comparison

Monday May 3rd, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Lisa Mayo

In 2018, the American Academy of Periodontology released their new classification system for periodontal conditions. It is now out with the old 1999 classification system and in with the new! Many changes were made, new categories were developed, and language was adjusted for identifying, diagnosing, and treatment planning patient health and disease states. Dental hygiene professors are faced with the task of removing the 1999 system from their curriculum and replacing with the 2018. Chair-side clinical educators have a particularly challenging role of incorporating this system into live patient care and guiding students on the correct identification of health, gingival disease, periodontal disease, and implant status. These tasks are daunting given the lack of resources and contemporary training on the 2018 AAP system. This course will provide a broad-stroke overview of the 2018 system and present comparisons and contrasts to the 1999 system to assist dental hygiene professors working chair-side with students during live patient care.

Radiology Simulator for the Dental Hygiene Setting

Monday April 26th, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Evan Fram MD, MBA & Royann Royer CDA, RDH, MPH

Training students to perform procedures can be challenging, particularly procedures that present a potential danger to patients and students. Physical simulators, including devices that can be used for training in local anesthesia and dental radiography, can be expensive and access can be limited, a problem made worse by the pandemic. Virtual Simulation, also known as computer-based simulation, can help address these problems and has been successfully used and studied for over a decade in medicine. With virtual simulation students can practice potentially dangerous procedures in a safe, virtual environment without endangering patients or themselves. In addition, virtual simulators can be relatively inexpensive, interactive and engaging, used by students anywhere and anytime, and can facilitate feedback and assessment so students can practice to mastery. This course will introduce a new Radiology Simulator. We will review the sections of the simulator including didactic information, video demonstrations, the interactive Simulator model and the Assessment section which allows students to send in sample images for the instructor to evaluate. We will demonstrate the Simulation software and answer your questions.

Caries and Dentinal Hypersensitivity: Incorporating Current Treatment Modalities into the Curriculum

April 5th, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Dr. Joy Void-Holmes

Dental hygiene educators are challenged to continually evaluate current research and incorporate findings into an inflexible curriculum. With modernization and innovation moving like the speed of lighting, it can be difficult for educators to keep up with advancing technologies. The end result …. Students are trained on outdated methods for providing care. This course will take a look at the latest evidence-based treatment modalities for caries and dentinal hypersensitivity along with strategies to incorporate new treatment methods into the curriculum. Join us for one hour to discuss communication and calibration among dental hygiene faculty!

Emotional Calibration for the Dental Hygiene Team

March 8, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Dr. Kelly Donovan

Dental hygiene educators are familiar with the term calibration as it equates to clinical calibration. This course is designed to look at calibration in a new way. This researched-based course will explain why emotional calibration between team members is the foundation for programmatic success, communication, and faculty cohesiveness. Join us for one hour to discuss communication and calibration among dental hygiene faculty!

How am I Going to Teach Local Anesthesia on Zoom?!!

February 22, 2021 @ 7pm EST with Kathy Bassett, BSDH, RDH, MEd

3DE Computer Simulation for Teaching Pre-Clinical LA The COVID Pandemic tossed us into unique challenges for teaching clinical skills. 3D Computer Simulation technology is here to help. Simulation teaching methodologies can enhance instruction, provide real-time student practice, and may reduce the number of clinical experiences needed for skill acquisition. Pre-commercial 3D computer simulation is available now to all dental hygiene and dental school in the US.
