Course Description

In 2018, the American Academy of Periodontology released their new classification system for periodontal conditions. It is now out with the old 1999 classification system and in with the new! Many changes were made, new categories were developed, and language was adjusted for identifying, diagnosing, and treatment planning patient health and disease states. Dental hygiene professors are faced with the task of removing the 1999 system from their curriculum and replacing with the 2018. Chair-side clinical educators have a particularly challenging role of incorporating this system into live patient care and guiding students on the correct identification of health, gingival disease, periodontal disease, and implant status. These tasks are daunting given the lack of resources and contemporary training on the 2018 AAP system. This course will provide a broad-stroke overview of the 2018 system and present comparisons and contrasts to the 1999 system to assist dental hygiene professors working chairside with students during live patient care.

Join us for one hour to discover how to integrate the 2018 AAP Classification System into your curriculum!
