Overview

Passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) is a challenging feat for students. With a failure rate of about 15% for first-time test takers, meaning 3 to 4 students out of every 20 will fail. This is concerning because, 10 years ago, the failure rate was only 5%.

What has changed? Why are students less successful now? Despite the textbooks remaining largely unchanged, it seems the environment and study patterns of students are contributing factors. Information overload and other distractions prevent students from focusing and performing well.

In this course, we will help guide students to success on the national boards by examining their studies and identifying winning strategies. With 43% of the examination being case studies, mastering concepts like head and neck anatomy is crucial but not enough. Critical thinking and controlling emotions during preparation and the exam are key components for success.

Course Objectives

  • Understanding the change in the environment that contributes to low attention, motivation, and retention.

  • Reviewing NBDHE guidelines.

  • Understanding how mastering case studies is key to student success.

  • Reviewing how basic memory skills to master foundational knowledge are important.

  • Reviewing how critical thinking skills should be emphasized after the foundation is set.

  • Reviewing anxiety and time management skills to improve performance during preparation and examination.
